The Non-Negotiable Foundations
Author: Thomas McLoughlin · 13 Aug 2026
Before any advanced tactic, the basics must be correct. NAP consistency, clean citations, and alignment between your website and Google Business Profile are still decisive.
In both the UK and the US, search systems and answer engines still rely on consistent, accurate identity signals. If the foundational data is messy, everything built on top of it becomes unreliable.
Why foundations still matter
AI systems and ranking systems cross-check information. When your business name, address, or phone number appears differently across directories, your website, and your Google Business Profile, the systems treat the entity as less reliable. Ambiguity reduces the chance of being selected for an answer or ranked highly in the map pack.
What correct foundations look like
- Exact NAP match between Google Business Profile, website footer/contact page, and major directories.
- One primary phone number used consistently.
- Address formatted the same way everywhere.
- No conflicting locations or old addresses still live on the web.
What to Avoid
- Using different phone numbers on the website and Google Business Profile.
- Leaving old addresses or closed locations active in directories.
- Creating citations on every possible site without checking accuracy.
- Changing the business name on the website while leaving the Google Business Profile under the old name.
- Treating NAP as a one-time setup rather than something to monitor.
Actions this week
- Open your Google Business Profile and your website side by side. Compare name, address, and phone character by character.
- Search your business name + city/town in Google and note the first five directory results. Check each for accuracy.
- Fix any mismatch you find. Start with the Google Business Profile and the website.
- List the three highest-authority local directories in your market and verify or claim those listings.
- Set a quarterly reminder to re-check NAP consistency.
Do this today
Pull up your Google Business Profile and your website contact page. Screenshot both. If they do not match exactly, correct them before anything else.
