Google Business Profile as the Primary Asset

Author: Thomas McLoughlin · 16 Aug 2026

Your Google Business Profile is no longer a secondary listing. It is the primary data source that both the map pack and many AI answers draw from.

In both the UK and the US, incomplete or neglected profiles quietly remove businesses from consideration. Treat the profile as the homepage that machines actually read.

What the profile now does

It supplies categories, services, attributes, hours, photos, posts, Q&A, and review text. These elements feed ranking signals and provide the raw material AI systems use when generating local answers.

A complete, regularly updated profile with specific information outperforms a sparse one every time.

Practical priorities

What to Avoid

Actions this week

  1. Audit every section of your Google Business Profile against a simple completeness checklist.
  2. Add or refine services so they match real customer search language.
  3. Upload three to five new, high-quality photos if the current set is thin or outdated.
  4. Answer any open questions in Q&A.
  5. Schedule one Google Business Profile post for this week.

Do this today

Open your Google Business Profile on a computer. Click through every tab. Note the empty or weak sections. Fix the single biggest gap before the end of the day.
