Hyperlocal Over Broad

Author: Thomas McLoughlin · 19 Aug 2026

City-wide ranking is mostly dead. Systems now favour businesses that clearly serve specific neighbourhoods, postcodes or defined service areas.

In both dense UK cities and sprawling US metro areas, relevance has narrowed. Trying to rank for an entire city while being weakly relevant everywhere usually produces weak results.

The shift to micro-markets

AI answers and map results increasingly prioritise proximity combined with clear relevance. A business that signals strong presence in a specific area often outperforms one that claims the whole city without evidence.

How to tighten focus

What to Avoid

Actions this week

  1. List the five areas or postcodes where you currently get the most work.
  2. Check how those areas appear in your Google Business Profile service settings.
  3. Review your website for any pages that claim broad city coverage without supporting detail.
  4. Identify one neighbourhood or service area that deserves clearer signals this month.
  5. Ask recent customers which area or landmark they associate with your business.

Do this today

Write down the three most important real service areas you want to own. Compare them to what currently appears on your Google Business Profile and website.
